Research

The motivation behind my research is the concept of carefree maneuvering which means that the pilot shall be able to entirely focus on the mission tasks while the flight control system automatically limits the aircrafts performance so that it remains controllable no matter the pilot's inputs, so called maneuver load limits, or envelope protection systems.

To achieve this standard Linear Control methods like LQ and H-infinity control is not enough, the control system need to be able to explicitly handle constraints on states and controls. This leads to Nonlinear Optimal Control strategies as Dynamic programming or Model Predictive Control (MPC).

My research interest is within the area of MPC and the main focus is on the high level problem formulation and its stability and robustness properties. I also have an interest in efficient implementations of MPC control laws in fast and safety critical systems such as flight control systems.

My research on the high level formulation of MPC is focused on finding suitable formulations of the optimization problem for the aeronautical industry. I am mainly interested in poperties such as stability and robustness. The stability properties has beed the main focus in my Licentiate thesis.

I also have an interest in implementation aspects such as fast and simple online implementation, ensuring real time constraints and MPC as an add on feature to an existing control system structure.

My research is funded by VINNOVA and the NFFP program through the two research projects Control Law Development for Constrained Systems and Optimal Control for Aeronautical Applications. More detailed descriptions of the research projects I am involved in can be found on the page MPC @ LiU
