With a background in cryptography and information security I'm no stranger to the concepts on which cryptographic currencies rely. Having followed the development for several years I am now convinced that this technology is important for the future.

Just like e-mail and instant messaging fundamentally changed the way we view communication will digital currencies like bitcoin, litecoin and the like be disruptive in the way we deal with finances. This technology makes it possible for anybody to perform cheap, secure and next-to-immediate financial transactions to anyone, unlimited by geography and social status, something that is not the case with traditional systems.

Due to the fact that digital currencies are new and combine several novel concepts from cryptography and computer science it is important that those of us who understands the technology take an active role in informing and teaching about the subject. It is not uncommon to see simple misunderstandings and errors being propagated by media in their coverage of bitcoin and the like. In fact, understanding cryptographic currencies is not especially difficult, and I have taken it upon myself to teach and inform the public and media on how it works.

Med en bakgrund i kryptografi och informationssäkerhet är det nog inte så konstigt att kryptografiska valutor ligger mig varmt om hjärtat. Jag har följt utvecklingen av kryptografiska valutor sedan flera år och tror att de kommer få en betydande roll i framtiden.

Precis som e-post och snabbmeddelanden i grunden förändrat sättet vi människor kommunicerar är jag övertygad om att kryptografiska valutor kommer möjliggöra saker vi aldrig hade tänkt på tidigare. Det faktum att man nästan omedelbart och till minimal kostnad kan skicka stora och små summor pengar utan att ta hänsyn till vart mottagaren befinner sig är något som har stor framtidspotential!

Medias täckning av kryptografiska valutor lämnar tyvärr ofta mycket att önska, och det finns flera exempel på felaktiga beskrivningar eller missförstånd som dyker upp i nyhetsartiklar eller dylikt. Jag ser det därför som en viktig del i min roll som forskare att utbilda i och svara på frågor om kryptografiska valutor som t.ex. Bitcoin och Litecoin. Det är faktiskt inte svårt att förstå sig på tekniken, så varför inte lära sig det från grunden?
